When people think about Hawaii they may picture beautiful beaches, crystal clear water and peaceful living. What they do not picture is the violent beginning to one of the most exciting places on the Earth. The Hawaiian Islands were created millions of years ago when hot magma burst from the sea floor and created a chain of six islands. The largest of them, Hawaii or the Big Island, will become the most influential island in the chain.
The Polynesians discovered the Big Island around 300 to 750 A.D. They came to Hawaii by canoes from the islands of Tahiti and the Cook Islands carrying wit them everything they needed to survive on the island. They caught tuna, sword fish and many other types of fish. The volcanic soil proved to be very fertile and was naturally irrigated from the melting snow on the volcanoes. They planted bananas and coconut trees while they bred dogs, chickens, and pigs...
