Young Goodman Brown is a moral story, which shows the lives of the puritans in the 18th century and of Goodman Brown who lives in exile in his own community after having met the devil.
I would like to show that Hawthorne has portrait powerful and daring women, who like pillars support men in difficult times and not as innocent victims as this student writes.
Most of the characters in the story have common names except for Goodman's wife who is called as Faith. This is the key word to the whole story and Hawthorne has given this symbolic word to a women. This alone shows the importance Nathaniel has given to women and it is not a coincidence when Goodman Browning kisses and says goodbye to Faith that he also later loses faith on mankind.
The girl writes in her thesis that women are powerless because they could not prevent the destruction of Goodman Brown but she never considers that neither men nor he himself could prevent so all are powerless not only women. This student also jumps to hasty generalization and says, " this marriage is not one of equals" simply because the author describes Faith as " peeping out".
"Poor little Faith" Goodman Brown thought, this clearly shows that he cares for his beloved wife but I do not understand how this college girl linked this Brown's thought to Faith and concluded that she is powerless. In fact when Goodman Brown says " I'll cling to her skirts and follow her to heaven " reveals the weakness in him. Even later in the story the same is revealed when the protagonist says " My Faith is gone there is no good on earth...
