In a way, I believe Mr. and Mrs. Mallard have a normal caring husband and wife relationship on the outside but I also think that Mrs. Mallard wants to be single without the restraints of a marriage on the inside. I think she loves her husband but it seems like she misses her freedom. In those days, a wife was expected to stay with her husband and divorce wasn't as common as it is today. I believe her crying and sobbing was half hearted because that was what she was suppose to do as a woman that lived in that particular time period was suppose to act.
Mrs. Mallard had no one follow her when she went to her room after hearing about the death of her husband. This could possibly mean that she already understood and accepted the fact that she would be "living for herself" the rest of her life...
