In Judy Brady's essay "I Want a Wife", she uses sarcasm to illustrate her underlying thesis by inciting the emotions of her readers, feminists of the 1970's. We will show how she illustrates the hardships of being a wife by presenting the benefits to the husband. We will also show how she makes an emotional appeal to the readers of Ms Magazine, those at the forefront of the feminist movement.
In Brady's paper sarcasm is used to illustrate how being a wife is like being a slave to the husband. She implies that being a wife is so unfair, that anyone would want a wife. Wives are responsible for working, taking care of their children, and keeping the physicality of a household in order while a husband is at school. A wife must attend to her children's, as well as her husband's social lives. A wife must be willing to make sacrifices for her children and husband.
The wife is also responsible for pleasuring the husband sexually. She must serve him, without regard for her own pleasure, and be willing to let him be promiscuous if he feels the need to...
