1.1 The team's Belbin profiles
A team role as defined by Dr Meredith Belbin is "A tendency to behave, contribute and interrelate with others in a particular way". Belbin team roles describe a pattern of behaviour that characterizes one person's behaviour in relationship to another in facilitating the progress of a team.
The types of behaviour in which people engage are infinite. But the range of useful behaviours, which make an effective contribution to team performance is finite. This behaviour could be grouped into a set number of related clusters to which the term 'team role' is applied. The nine team roles in current use are presented bellow: Belbin (1993, The term team role refers to a tendency to behave, contribute and interrelate with others at work in certain distinctive ways. Each team consists of behaviour patterns that the individual engages in or is comfortable with. People are capable of instigating change in their ways of thinking, behaving and interacting and can therefore vary their team role preference as well.
