Man Ray was born in Philadelphia on August 27, 1890 as Emmanuel Radnitsky. ... His new name came out of his original one, mainly because Ray wanted to stick with his original identity somehow. Man Ray had an artistic point of view from an early age of five. After graduating from high school at the age of eighteen in 1908, Ray received an art scholarship to attend architecture school, but he wanted to do something different, something more traditional. ... However, Ray felt a lack of flexibility while attending those classes. ... It was during this time that Ray came in contact with a lot of popular personalities in the New York art scene, including photographer Alfred Stieglitz whose help exposed Ray to the modern art world, which heavily influenced his style.
