Throughout the 1990s, Microsoft had to battle against the likes of the United States Department of Justice and twenty individual states. The case against Microsoft was for the violations of two sections of the Sherman Act. They were in violation of restraining trade according to Section 1 and monopolization according to Section 2. This small company from the mid-1970s was now seeing their strong foundation shaking and cracking. These are the points of view from three different sides: Microsoft, the Federal District Court, and the Department of Justice.
Microsoft was arguing for the fact that they did not violate any rules or regulations of how a competitive business should be run. The company felt that they were threatened by other software companies such as Java and Netscape. Since both Java and Netscape Navigator were considered as Microsoft's competition, the argument could be made that Microsoft was not considered to be a monopoly. Through that, Microsoft stated that either Java or Netscape would not have gained entry if there a monopoly took place. There would have been significant barriers taken place...
