Ordinary Resurrections By Jonathon Kozol The main events take place at an elementary school called PS 30 and at a church called St. Anns of Morrisania in a neighborhood called Mott Haven. The events mostly take place in the year of 1997 and 1998. All of the children are Black or Hispanic and they live in a section of the South Bronx. They live in a deeply segregated community of Blacks and Hispanics; less than two-tenths of 1% of school enrollment is represented by Caucasians in Mott Haven. The racial isolation is accompanied by poor education and joblessness. The families are very poor. Some have gone without food several times a month. The children have respiratory problems such as asthma. They have even lost a relative to AIDS and they can’t see their fathers unless they visit them in prison. There were several children that were talked about extensively. The first is Tabitha Brown who is 6 years old and in the first grade. She is a “dreamer.” Her reading skills are not very good but they’re getting better. She also has a secret crush on Elio who is a 7-year-old Hispanic boy. He is one of the smallest kids for his age group, because of this, he gets picked on, which causes him to get into a lot of fights.
