HEARINGS BEGIN IN PLAME PROBE
On Wednesday, January 21 a grand jury began to hear evidence in the Valerie Plame case. The jury is trying to find out who leaked the identity of Valerie Plame to the columnist, Robert Novak.. Plame's husband, Joseph Wilson, claims that the Bush administartion leaked the information to the press after he spoke out against Bush's reasons for going to war, while serving as an Ambassador. Sources also say that witnesses with more direct information about the case will be called to testify, in the near future. Although grand juries are not commonly used in criminal probing cases, it was decided to use a grand jury in order to add more credibility to the results of the probe. The biggest question in the case is whether or not the persons, who leaked the information, knew that Plame was undercover when they leaked her identity. In order to indict anyone in the case this must be found out. Because of the lack of evidence the prosecutors may find out who leaked the information, but not be able to charge them with anything.
