"Should we allow gay couples to legally marry?" Lost in all the legal battles and political maneuvering is that question. Homosexual relationships are increasingly gaining acceptance in this country; however, these couples have not been permitted to marry. Opinions vary in this controversial subject. In Lisa Schiffren’s “Gay Marriage, an Oxymoron” she brings up good points about the tradition and history of marriages, but her tone is too bias against gays and has false accusations. Austin Cline writes the article “Gay Marriage: Marriage is for Raising Children?” he brings up each ones argument with good issues, a better comparing and contrasting, although at times too critical, yet still a better persuasive article. Most people when arguing about gay marriages, tries to define the institution of marriage. In the beginning of Lisa Schiffren’s article, she states about gay marriages that “Considering what a momentous change this would be-a radical redefinition of society’s most fundamental institution-there has been almost no real debate.”(494) Although it is true that legalizing gay marriages would change the institution, that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happen before. She doesn’t mention that in the past, marriages between different race was considered a radical change, but nowadays marriages between a black and white person is now considered normal. In Cline’s, when arguing about gays desecrating the sacred institution “As an institution, marriage helps provide legal protection and stability to human relationships that might not otherwise survive problems and pressures under more informal terms.” That is a good point, because if homosexuals were not allowed to marry they would not have the same protection or stability as straight people does. Both have good arguments, but Schiffren’s opinion is stating that gay marriages is the first real controversial topic regarding marriages, which it isn’t. Marriages confront many issues in the past, like race, or age.
