WHAT IF ….. It was freshman year. I was about fourteen, a scrawny hundred and twenty pound kid. See, all my life I wanted to play football with a team. I always played around with the other neighborhood kids but I wanted more. I wanted stats. Not just remembering that sweet twenty yard pass to your wide receiver that was too intimidating to tackle, so everyone would let him by. I wanted to see how much potential I really had. I could never play football because of mother being to scared to let me put on some pads and get knocked around, therefore, I never got the opportunity to play. Not this year! It was the 99-00 try outs for my high school, Brick Memorial. This was the year where I said to myself, “I’m playing football no matter what my mother says.” It was around the beginning of August, about ninety degrees and the humidity feeling like I was in the desert. You could actually hear the pavement sizzle. It was the first day of the practice, a long and easy day. As my mom was dropping me off in the back of the school were the All-Shore star Sean Murray played, I saw a group of kids. They were my friends from eighth grade, yet I knew they would be more than just friends at the end of the season. More like Family. I would say about sixty kids were laughing, talking, and throwing around a mini-sized football. As I hopped out of the car, with no hesitation I heard my mom say to me, “Make sure you be careful.” I looked back and gave a little smirk knowing that this would be a tremendous experience. I walked to the crowd of friends, three of whom were my close friends. Noah, who is still a close buddy of mine, Jeff who I’ve lost touch with, and Anthony who is my best friend still today. All of us being top popular kids in the eighth grade knew we had it made. At least in the perspective that our teammates would respect us. Plus on top of all this our coach, Mr.
