The Great Wall of China, today, is one of the most important tourist attractions in China, but hundreds of years ago it was essential to the ancient Chinese for protecting and shaping the cultures within it. Questions about who built it, why did they build it, and how did they build it have sometimes puzzled experts. The most important piece of evidence people today look to is the wall itself, which still stands after thousands of years. The Great Wall of China is the only man made structure that can be seen from space and, if laid flatly, would cover 1/3 of the earth. The question is how could such a structure like this be built with the tools and supplies available at the time, and why.
The first walls in China were mostly used in the courtyards of many families' homes. Walls then began to surround the towns and villages. Elders organized these walls to be built out of the earth to help protect the towns. Though many writers say that the walls are not likely to be part of the great wall, the ideas and methods of building walls for protecting were later passed down to later dynasties.
