Mike Ward brings up several interesting issues in his article, “Being Lara Croft, or, we are all Sci-Fi.” Ward discusses Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft and her ability to make Tomb Raider an even more appealing game through her image as well as being the main focus in its advertisements. ...
Lara Croft may be an animated character in a video game, but she is still viewed by many as a sex symbol nonetheless. ... “As Lara Croft’s image proliferates through various media, she is becoming more diffuse and simultaneously more mythic (1).” Ward is stating here that because of media and advertising, this desirable image of Lara Croft is made known to millions of people, and from it she has become somewhat of a pop-culture icon and legend.
Tomb Raider would of course have the same purpose and goals as a video game even without Lara Croft, but it is she that makes the game more exciting to play and even more so sought after, which is why Tomb Raider uses Lara Croft as bait for their advertisements.
