Gambling is detrimental to a community not only on the financial level but on other levels as well. Gambling can lead to the disorder known as pathologic gambling, which often goes hand in hand with alcohol abuse and depression. What can start as a game can end with far worse consequences.
Who can pathologic gambling affect? The disorder knows no age limitsit is frequently seen in men from the age of twenty-one to the age of fifty-five. Even then, it can appear at earlier ages. In a study of those with such gambling problems, over five percent of the subjects showed signs of problem gambling from ages eleven to eighteen. A problem that can inflict one adult member of a community could easily spread to other adult members and then the children of the community like wildfire.
As previously stated, gambling does not just cause financial setbacks, but is somewhat of a gateway to more significant problems. Unemployment and bouts of withdrawal could easily plague the gambler...
