In his stage drama Educating Rita Willy Russell has used setting, costume, dialogue and humour to construct characters who function as vehicles to encourage the audience to consider important issues such as the value of education, class division and mobility and the role of women in society. ... Although Frank and Rita are the two main characters, we are introduced to a number of other, off stage characters through their words.
