Immigration Restrictions Why were they needed

The United States is a fairly new country, only gaining their independence in 1776. It took a lot of time and effort to build up America into an independent nation with a stable government. The credit for all time and effort that was put into building such a great nation can be given to a number of different people through out America's short history, such as the original settlers, past presidents, and even people from other countries. Before the 13th Amendment, which was the freeing of slaves, Africans were brought over to America to help on plantations. On these plantations, which grew many different crops, one such crop being tobacco, African men would mainly work in the fields, while African women would do a lot of the work in the home. While slavery was a big thing before the 13th Amendment, between the years of 1880-1920, Americans started to get frustrated with the amount of people from other countries coming into the states. With the numbers always increasing and more and more Americans getting upset, the government decided to take action, but why now? Why was it okay to bring Africans to work on the lands, but between 1880-1920 they needed laws to keep immigrants out?
The United States government had taken many different measures through out history to try and end, or at least limit the amount of immigrants that came in to the coun-try. One of the first laws that they passed was that of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 (Simon; 152)...
