Oprah Winfrey was raised by her grandparents in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Her father was in the military and her mother wanted to leave Mississippi. Oprah was raised on a farm there until she was six. The whole time she would receive harsh discipline such as whippings. When she was six she moved to Milwaukee to live with her mother.
When she was only nine years old her cousin and other male relatives started to sexually abuse her. It took her nearly twenty-seven years to get over those experiences. She felt ashamed of herself and then in 1990 she admitted that the molestations were not her fault. They ended when she moved to Nashville to live with her father when she was fourteen.
