Sir Francis Bacon wrote "The Four Idols" to instruct and warn his readers. He clearly believes that he has found the only way for human beings to really understand themselves and the world around them. In this essay, he addresses the most common hindrances to human understanding and explains ways to overcome them. Bacon thoroughly describes each of the "idols" in an attempt to help the unenlightened souls in this world. Personally, I found "The Four Idols" informative and helpful. Bacon's revolutionary ideas were a great contribution to the world of the seventeenth century and are still influential today.
Bacon excellently conveys his ideas and theories on human understanding through detailed examples. There are many obstacles that prevent mankind from true understanding.
"The idols and false notions which are now in possession of the human understanding, and have taken deep root therein, not only so beset men's minds that truth can hardly find entrance, but even after entrance obtained, they will again in the very instauration of the sciences meet and trouble us." (Bacon 420)
