Since the Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937, it has been one of the principal landmarks of both San Francisco and California. The Bridge, which is approaching the age of 67, was designed by Joseph B. Strauss. This bridge has become one of the most famous bridges in America, with almost everyone recognizing it's now infamous color, International Orange.
Construction of the bridge began on January 5, 1933. Today, some call it the "most spectacular bridge in the world." But a century ago, building the Golden Gate Bridge seemed like an impossible task. Any bridge in it's location, between San Francisco and Sausalito CA, would have to be able to withstand brutal winds, tide, and fog. It would also sit less than eight miles from the epicenter of the most disastrous earthquake in history.
