The Media Institution: The Institution of Vices
Is the media institution described in the video The Merchants of Cool an institution that will cultivate a good life? Better yet, will the members of the institution lead happy lives? According to Aristotle's Nichomachean Ethics and what a good life consist of, this institution does not fulfill the requirements of a virtuous institution. In this paper, I will elaborate how the media institution described in the movie does not cultivate a good life. I will point out that it does not encourage a good life in the sense that the institution not composed of the qualities that will nurture a good life. Its members cannot be virtuous people by treating the target audience they way they do, therefore the institution cannot be virtuous. I also will discuss how the media institution can negatively affect others socially, that is, how this institution can cultivate something other than what a good life should be. It should be an institution in which its members lean toward acting virtuously for the right reasons. I will also address the fact that this institution causes young adults to cultivate behavior that will ultimately deter them from living good lives among one other
