Las Meninas was painted by the famous; Diego Velazquez in 1656.The central focus of the painting is on the five year old daughter of King Phillip IV and Queen Mariana, the infanta (princess) Margarita. Surrounding her is her attendants and to the far left of the viewer is the painter himself; Diego Velazquez. In the painting Velazquez shows him as the painter of the Baroque period as very respected. He shows us that by painting him dressed as a courtier, and having the Order of Santiago on his chest, the Spanish knighthood, and the keys to the doors of the palace in his sash tells us that he must have been very high in status to be allowed into private world of the king..
