Socrates describes many benefits of philosophy. He realizes through philosophy that he knows enough to know that he doesn't know everything. He basically says that he has an open awareness of his own ignorance. If you already think that you know everything, then it is impossible for you to learn something new.
He believed that philosophy brought about many questions of morality. He brought up the question "Is the pious loved by the gods because it is pious, or is it pious because it is loved by the gods?" This is a new thought for the Athenians. It is virtually impossible to answer this question correctly. It is all a moral judgement, such as "Is it illegal because it is wrong, or is it wrong because it is illegal." These kinds of questions are important ones to ask...
