Hungary: central Europe's economic powerhouse 01 April 2004 Hungary is an economic powerhouse among the 10 countries that will join the European Union on May 1, 2004. The country that is famous for Franz Liszt and the Rubik's cube is one of the strongest economies in central Europe. And due to its long borders, Hungary will also be expected to play a key role in securing the European Union's southeastern limits as only three of Budapest's seven neighbours -- Austria, Slovenia and Slovakia -- will be EU members in May. Hungary has survived spiralling inflation and unemployment as it adapted its economy in the 1990s from communism. Despite a slowdown in 2000, growth is still double the average of the EU.
