Davy Crockett
What is a folk hero? The Webster's Student Dictionary defines it as 'an actual person about whom exaggerated stories are told.' So in other words there is usually a real person at the core of the story but it is exaggerated. There are many folk tales written and told about Davy Crockett but he was a real hero who is still today admired for his bravery.
Born on August 17, 1786 near Limestone Tennessee, Davy Crockett was the fifth of nine children in his family. At around age 13 he got in a fight at school and then hen he ran away from home to escape punishment. But after 2 years at age 16 he returned back home. Davy learned to read and write when he was 18 and got married when he was 19 to Mary Polly Finely. Years before he was born his grandparents were murdered by Creek and Cherokee Indians.
