The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis of the personal and professional life of John (Jack) Welch, Jr. Jack Welch has a rich biography, both in terms of his personality as well as his relatively rapid rise to success. Jack Welch is one of America's best-known and most respected corporate heads. His restructuring of General Electric made a traditional American industrial giant into a global profit machine. He pushed GE into the international spotlight as a paradigm for the 21st century Corporation, for example, leaner, more competitive, and profit driven. In the 1980s, Welch's technique for restructuring earned him a reputation as ruthless, but in the 1990s era of downsizing, many of the corporations followed his lead (Slater, 2004). With goal setting, empowerment, and communication, Welch transformed GE into an energized company ready to face world competition. Through an analysis of the techniques employed by Welch, one can gain a better understanding of how to motivate outstanding performance in any organization.
