The first twelve years of America's organized government, 1789-1801 were heavily influenced by the Federalist Party. The Federalist Party was one of the first political organizations in the United States. Although the first president, George Washington, was not a federalist, his Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, was the developer and leader of the Federalist Party. The members of this party supported a strong central government with the power to tax, a large army and navy which was strong and could defend our country, and a stable financial system, which was going to be mostly a manufacturing society and cared less about the farmers and poorer people.
The Federalist party was a conservative party. It was originally led by Alexander Hamilton and John Adams. They favored the needs of the great merchants and landowners, and establishment of a well-ordered society. In foreign affairs they were pro-British, while the Jeffersonians (Anti-Federalists) were pro-French. The members of the Federalist party were mostly wealthy merchants, big property owners in the North, and conservative small farmers and businessmen.
