for the love of it

Since the beginning of time, people have been modifying their bodies into various shapes to achieve today’s body’s cultural standards. Today’s society and media for example: MTV and BET, often give off the perception that everyone has to have a slender or built body. The people are unaware of the risks and the health threats. My situation is a little different even though society . I can remember back in elementary school, I was always active, always on the go. Guess some people would call it “hyper activeness,” “can’t sit still,” “ always moving about.” Of course, at that young age in elementary school, health was not a major problem for me, after all I was young and besides what do elementary students really know about health anyway? My mother was a registered nurse at the time and she always tried to educate me on certain health issues and health risks. Overall her methods were effective. She made me watch health related videos such as: The Magic School Bus, Health Quest, PBS Health shows and she would even order health books. One of my favorite episodes on “The Magic School Bus” was, when Ms. Frizzle and the kids explored the stomach. It was real interesting because, I could recall it talking about the storage of certain types of foods and fats. Even though I can’t recall much of my elementary years, I can clearly remember my visits to the pediatrician office. The pediatrician visits were usually simple visits meaning vaccination and things of that nature. My pediatrician whom I still remember to this day, I can remember Dr. Bates taking me to a secluded room. The room was white, dark and cold. The scent of fresh medicine was in the air, obviously I wanted to know what was going on.
