Mechanical engineering is about the design, construction and operation of machines. It is concerned with all the parts of machinery that move, as well as with structures such as bridges and towers.
Engines, gas turbines and steam power plants, propellers and hydraulic turbines fall into this category. It can be regarded as converting energy, usually from fuel, wind or water power into a useful application, such as a vehicle engine converting power from petrol or diesel into motion.
It almost always involves gears, cogs, pulleys or hydraulics. These are called machine components and are designed and made by mechanical engineers. They are used in a wide variety of applications such as the transmission system of a vehicle, its brakes or its steering mechanism.
As a mechanical engineer you may find yourself working in one of many areas of industry, such as:
* manufacturing - making engine components, textile machinery or aircraft parts
* processing - designing, making and operating industrial plant
* service - railways, steel, coal and power
* government - defence installations and scientific work
* armed forces - constructing bridges or operating armoured vehicles.
You can choose to apply your engineering skills to the design, construction and application of an almost endless range of machinery. You might be designing and building an aeroplane wing, developing a new human hip joint, a more efficient car engine, a racing cycle, a department store escalator or a production line in a factory...
