Hatred and the Crime It Causes
The United States is faced with a troubling crime epidemic. In a country with so much law enforcement a person would expect crime to decrease, yet it hasn't. One major form of crime that has continued to plague the United States is the concept of hate crimes. Hate crime used to be considered any enforceable offense against a race other than your own. Over recent years hate crimes have started to encompass more, attacks on one's gender, sexual preference, and even choice of religion are now considered hate crimes (Proud 1). Even after the FBI began their own division to counteract hate crimes fourteen years ago, the reported incidents remained high. Hate crimes are the result of fears and opposition. When people feel threatened they act out in inappropriate ways, expressing themselves through these hate crimes. And when people have strong but opposing views on the same matter their anger may result in acts of violence towards others.
