The Loss of Innocence
Sin and the act of sin is a highly debated subject that has boggled many people throughout the age of time. In the Old Testament of the Bible, sin is first observed when Eve defies God and takes a bite out of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. Because of this, women and sin are often mixed together, since in theory woman was the first to sin. When Eve took the first bite out of the forbidden fruit, she realized everything that was wrong in the world. She learned what sin was, so she began to cover herself up so Adam could not see her. The definition of innocence is the state, quality, or virtue of being innocent, or the freedom from sin, moral wrong, or guilt through lack of knowledge of evil. In essence due to this definition, Eve had lost her innocence with her understanding of sin.
In Bless Me, Ultima; Rudolfo Anaya did an excellent job defining the loss of innocence that Antonio went through. During the entire novel, Antonio posed questions concerning his uncertainty regarding sin, innocence, death, the afterlife, forgiveness, and other such spiritual questions.
