Hitchcock The British Years

Hitchcock, the British Years

For Hitchcock the years spent making films in both the British International Studios and The Gaumont Studios helped pave the way for one of the most influential directors ever. Although never really pleased with the way either of the studios worked and with the added stress of financial instability within the studios Hitchcock nonetheless was able to persevere and create some fourteen films. Starting his career in with silent films Hitchcock began to develop a style of film making that would become his trademark as he pioneered a path for future directors and screenplay writers in the genre of suspense and mystery films.
For my film comparison I chose one of his later films from his British period the 1936 film Sabotage. ... This film was regarded as one of if not the best film that Hitchcock did during this period in his career. The film was based on the Joseph Conrad novel Secret Agent, although many of the details were changed and the film ended up being undeniably Hitchcock. ... In an almost typical reaction to a Hitchcock film the audience in theatre also has a habit of laughing at the images of death and violence as a way to cope with the uncomfortable images flashing on the screen. ... On a side note I also noticed watching this film that Hitchcock likes to relate something that seems so innocent and loving directly with tragedy and death, the birds with the bomb under them and the puppy that Stevie is playing with on the bus just before it explodes. This is one of those situations that has and will continue to stay common in Hitchcock films where the viewing audience is aware of the fact that the boy is wondering around without a care with a ticking time bomb under his arm, but the people in the film have no idea what the consequences of their actions are.
