How does Brian Clark use the interaction between characters to create dramatic tension?
What effect do these characters have on the audience?
The play centres on Ken Harrison's determination to exercise a choice over his own life or death. Opposing him are the forces of medical bureaucracy. Brian Clark is trying to show you who has the power in the hospital and how much Ken can actually do, it basically shows his disability by bringing the play to him and not letting him move around the hospital. This would be why the majority of the play is in Ken's room. Ken Harrison used to be a sculptor, but he had a car accident causing him to go to hospital. As a result of his accident he is paralysed from the neck down.
The first are of dramatic tension I am going to write about is when Dr Emerson disobeys Ken's wishes and gives him the injection of valium. Dr Emerson's first decision on page 12 is when he ups Ken's dosage because he thinks it will help him...
