Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's Disease, a progressive degenerative disease of the brain characterized by confusion, loss of memory, disorientation, restlessness, speech disturbances, inability to carry out purposeful movements, and hallucinations. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia among older people. Dementia is a brain disorder that affects a person's ability to perform daily activities. Alzheimer's involves the parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language. As of now scientists do not know what causes AD, and there is no cure but therapies are available that can reduce the severity of the symptoms. The average survival rate of a person with the disease is between 5 and 10 years. Many people now survive 15 years or more because of improvements in treatment. The diagnosis of AD can only be made through an autopsy.
The disease usually begins after age 60, and risk goes up with age. It is much less common for younger people to get AD...
