The New York Times vs. the United States of America court case was heard in 1971 by the Supreme Court. It dealt with the printing of the Pentagon papers by the "New York Times" newspaper
The facts of the case were simple. The Pentagon Papers leaked to the "New York Times" where they were printed. The Pentagon Papers was a 47-volume study that criticized US policies in Southeast Asia and was authorized by Secretary of State Robert S. McNamara in 1967. These papers also detailed the entire history of the Vietnam War, beginning with the Second World War and ending with the Paris peace talks. An employee at a California think tank, Daniel Ellsberg, was given access to the study because his think tank analyzed American strategy in Vietnam. Convinced that the United States should not be in Vietnam, he photocopied the papers in hopes of proving his point of view.
