The topic of drugs and alcohol is in many cases a touchy one, however, it is unquestionably an issue that needs to be confronted. Now and in the past the abuse of drugs and alcohol has had an extremely powerful effect on society in more ways that one. It effects the individual on a social and domestic level, as well as on an emotional and perhaps physical level as well. The thousands of deaths per year due to alcohol and drug abuse has a serious effect on our population as well. Things weren’t much different in the past, many drugs were abused regularly by significant figures in history. The abuse of drugs has always been an active aspect of the society throughout the 20th century. As time evolved and new trends developed, different drugs came into circulation. In the early decades of the 1900’s many drugs were in circulation but not in the ways that one might think. Many of today’s illegal substances were distributed over the counter by doctors for remedies of common illnesses.
