Complexity of a Relationship in A Dill Pickle

Relationships have various degrees of complexity. These different levels can be seen in Katherine Mansfield's short story "A Dill Pickle" through the steam of consciousness narration that is used . As stated in Great Writers of the English Language the story "inspired by an encounter with a former lover, brilliantly conveys the kaleidoscope of memories and emotions beneath the surface of a meeting that had no practical outcome." (68) The relationship that Vera and her ex-lover had is remembered as at times arduous, but essentially good. This relationship ended, however. From a conversation held in a restaurant, it is reveled that Vera and the man had many aspirations and dreams of places they would go and thing they would do. The two had much hope of what their relationship could have been. While at the restaurant, it almost seems as if Vera and the man have a good relationship again, but it is soon obvious that their relationship is just as they had left it, unpleasant. Because of Vera's realization that the man has not changed, she leaves him sitting alone at the table. As seen, their relationship is doomed as shown through the three different degrees: what they were while dating, what they longed to be, and what they currently are...
