Tragic Hero Essay In Shakespearean tragedies, the development of the lead character is defined as the "tragic hero." A tragic hero is someone who holds a high position in society and is well respected but has a tragic flaw. Brutus, the tragic hero in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, is the chief judge of Rome, he was respected, and people liked him, but his love for Rome led him to a tragic downfall. Brutus’ position involved him to make big decisions and the people respected what he did. A Quote from Act I that emphasizes this is “O, he has a high place in the hearts of the Roman people and what would appear offensive if we did it, his approval, like precious alchemy, will transform it to something virtuous and worthy.” This means that Brutus needs to go along with the conspiracy for it to look legitimate in the eyes of the people. Another quote from Act I that shows his high position is “I fear that the people choose Caesar for their king.” This shows his position because it shows that he does not approve of Caesar becoming king of Rome.
