About The Author
William Golding was born in Cornwall, England, on September 19, 1911. He is recognized as one of the greatest English writers of his time. Golding spent several years of his life studying physics and English Literature at Marlboro and Oxford University. With his educated Golding became a teacher and schoolmaster. Golding also served the Royal Navy during World War II. The war had a lasting affect on him, which we can see through some of his novels. Having seen war, Golding no longer believed in innocence, a topic that he addresses in his first novel, Lord of the Flies.
After his first novel became a success, Golding decided to continue writing by making his second novel The Inheritors in 1955. This book detailed the thesis that our ancestors were 'fire-builders' that triumphed over a gentler race by using violence and deceit. Many of his books challenge our ideas on 'Human Nature' continuing in the books Pincher Martin in 1956 and Free Fall in 1959...
