Introduction
Claudia knew the routine well. Her husband would come home with a twelve pack and tell her he had already eaten dinner and just wanted to have a beer or two. After about two hours of guzzling beers, he would be drunk and angry. He would begin by calling her names and would quickly escalate to kicking her and beating her with his fists while their children looked on in horror. Sometimes she called the police, but even if they arrested him, the solution was only temporary. Once he was out on bail, she and her two children would be in danger again.
Domestic violence, especially in the south has historically been considered a private, family problem that is not talked about outside the family. Recently, however, it has been recognized as one of our nation's most serious public health issues.
