Communication has become a key factor in every aspect of our daily lives. As indicated by Thomas Mann, in Chapter 1 of Human Communication, "Speech is civilization itself. The word, even the most contradictory word, preserves contact-it is silence which isolates." In order to make that communication productive and beneficial to the involved parties, it needs to be done in a manner that is effective.
Communication that is not effective can sometimes do more harm than good. The person that is delivering the message may have the very best intentions at heart, but if the meaning is misinterpreted, the results can be other than advantageous. So why is effective communication such an issue and what is do difficult about it? Certainly at a young age, we all learn to speak in some language or another. There really is no effort involved, you just have a thought and open your mouth right? By speaking, you are communicating effectively then right?..
