The power of the mind is an absolutely wonderful tool we have within us and this book has most defiantly proven that. Having worked for physicians for many years, I have felt the frustration Bernie speaks of throughout the book, both with patients and the doctor's. There have been many times I have encountered a patient who has been told that they are "terminal", and the majority of the time I felt as though I was dealing with a completely different person than I had in the past. Most of my patients seemed to have given up all hope and were just waiting to die.
Learning to listen to the patient's wants or needs has proven to be a very difficult task for many physicians to concur. Fortunately, we have a wonderful pioneer to learn so much from and grasp the concept of a patient/doctor relationship and how to work with the mind and the illness.
In forming the ECaP program Bernie found there are 3 types of patients and has worked from that to learn from and about the patient. The first type consists of 15-20 of all patients who unconsciously wish to die, using the illness as a way to escape all their problems. The largest group of patient's, containing 60-70 percent are considered actors, playing the role to keep the doctor happy. These patients tend to take all medications prescribed, show up for every appointment, do everything they are told, never question the doctor's decision and would rather be operated on than work to get well...
