The Color Purple Theme: Personal Transformation
The Color Purple by Alice Walker chronicles the life of a woman named Celie from the time she is fourteen years old until she has completed her journey to becoming an independent woman. The book is set up in the form of a journal that Celie frequently writes in recording the daily events of her life. Celie deals with many hardships throughout her life; she is raped by her "Pa" (whom she later finds out is not her real father) when she is a young girl and is then sent to live with an abusive husband. Celie has two children with the man she thinks is her father but never meets them (until the end of the book) because they are taken away from her. Celie overcomes these obstacles and many others over the course of the book. Walker focuses on several themes throughout the novel but the most central is the theme of personal transformation. A personal transformation is when a person analyzes their life and wants something about it to change; they mentally develop and grow for the better. This theme is demonstrated in the lives of characters from The Color Purple, such as Celie and Mr. ____ (Albert). The main character in the story, Celie, makes the most significant transformation by growing from a submissive, abused person into a confident and independent businesswoman...
