The Awakening
Edna undergoes an awakening in which she defies the usual position of a woman in the late 1800's. With friends and occurrences in her life, Edna is able to discover herself and new desires. She experiences her new ability to swim, a similar relationship to birds, and help from Robert and Adele, all of which awaken her for the first time. .
The biggest awakening in Edna's life is her new ability to swim. Swimming is something very special to Edna that she has wants to learn, but in the Victorian period, women are not supposed to concern themselves with their own wishes and desires. It was not until after a party that she confronted the sea. After hesitating, she gets overcome by a power and enters the sea. The new power she gains is so overwhelming that she tries to swim beyond any point that any woman has ever gone. However, she is not as strong as she would like to be, so she swims back to the shore and returns home...
