Oedipus the King is a strickingly tragic play which was written by Sophocles more than 400 years before the birth of Christ. This play is about a king named Oedipus, who at birth received the misfortune of being destined to sleeping with his mother and killing his own father. As soon as his parents learned about his faith, they abandoned their son and left him to be raised by a different family. This story tells how Oedipus did everything in his power to escape his fate but was unable to, and was then severely punished for the crimes he had committed. At the beginning of the play, Oedipus, King of Thebes, had the good intention of saving his city from the misery it was captured in. Oedipus was approached by the citizens of Thebes because he had saved the city once before, loosening them from the Sphinx's riddle. Since Oedipus wanted to fulfill his duty and act as a noble king should, he sent Kreon, his brother in law to Apollo, in hopes to find out what must be done to save the city. Kreon returns with the information that the city must rid themselves of the evil person that was contaminating the city.
