Cleopatra VII was born in 69 BC in the capital of Egypt, Alexandria. Her father, Ptolemy XII, also known as Auletes, was the Pharaoh of Egypt at that time. When Auletes died in 51 BC, Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy, inherited the throne. She was only about the age of eighteen when she became the new Queen of Egypt. Knowing how to speak nine different languages, including that of Egyptian, she was the only Ptolemy to know the language of the land. This aided her in becoming a very intelligent and political women in leadership. She was also a mathematician and a very good businesswoman.
Because of Egyptian tradition, Cleopatra had to marry her brother Ptolemy, who was only about twelve at the time, but it was only a marriage of convenience. Ptolemy XIII stayed in the background for the most part while Cleopatra ruled alone. Some of Ptolemy's advisors resented Cleopatra's independent rule and had her exiled from the land, allowing Ptolemy XII to take over in 48 BC...
