Eight Men Out by Asinof
Eight Men Out takes place in the town of Chicago back in 1919. It is about how eight players from
the Chicago White Sox of the American League were accused of trying to intentionally lose baseball games in
the World Series in order to make money from gambling. It later became know as the Black Sox Scandal.
The White Sox were having a terrific year in 1919. They were playing exiting baseball. They had
many thrilling come from behind victories and were considered the best in the league, maybe in baseball.
They were happy with winning, but frustrated by the owner, Charles Comiskey and his cheap ways with
money. His cheap ways with money were well know. In fact, the nickname the Black Sox did not
come from the scandal as many people think, but from the Comiskey refusal to wash the players uniforms
after every game because it cost money. The uniforms were so dirty that the fans and reports started calling
them Black Sox, instead of White Sox...
