"A Change of Attitude" In the essay “A Change of Attitude,” Brant Berry notes that his father, a “factory worker” and “good man” (545), regarded school as “prison” (544). Berry also found high school, especially reading, “tedious.” He was more interested in “partying and girls” (545). Yet he still graduated, though he asserts that he “didn’t deserve” to do so. He then went on to college but dropped out after his wife became pregnant (546). Inspired by his wife’s cousin, he started reading “self-help” books and began to enjoy reading for the first time and to feel better about himself. As a result, the author returned to college, but continued to work extensive hours (547). This, he laments, leaves him little time to spend with his family. Nevertheless, he concludes that his dedication to his education demonstrated to his kids “the right attitude toward school” (548).
