Body Modifications “Body Modifications” by Catherine Firpo, is about the hidden meaning behind changing one’s physical appearance. She believes that “It’s natural to feel that we were born “unfinished” and to desire piercings, scars, ink, body building machines, anything that will improve on ( at least in our own eyes ) the body that we were born with”. She writes about the symbolism of how changing our bodies goes beyond pain and creates a better self awareness, both physically and mentally. She also touches on the lengths to which people have gone through just for the sake of modifying their bodies. From long distance running and weightlifting to tattoos and surgeries, she sheds light on the range of options we have for changing our bodies. In the end, I believe that Firpo couldn’t be more right in her belief that changing our bodies to please the world, could never replace the feeling we get from changing because we want to change.
