The Giant Panda is a gracious and mysterious creature of this earth. There are few left in the world, populations in the mere thousands; most are in protected refuges and research facilities. These facilities are where we can observe these majestic creatures and try to learn more about them.
The Giant Panda is a bear (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), although much debate as to which family it is more closely related to has risen in years past. It is a mammal that demonstrates an amazing ability to conserve energy.
The Giant Panda, an omnivore, sustains itself on a diet of mostly bamboo. They have been known to eat meat when available to them. They also may eat other plants as well. Pandas in captivity have favored such treats as carrots and apples. There are three basic types of bamboo that they consume that grow at different times throughout the year...
