Commentary to the first part
In Mrs. Dalloway, a particular memory or experience serves as a coherent center for a character's interpretation of his or her life. When reading Mrs. Dalloway it is important to remember that, even though the novel is not in the first person, we are immersed in the subjective mental world of various characters. What they say and think is often colored by personal motivations and prejudices.
Clarissa's rejection of Peter's proposal is clearly a crucial event in her life. For better or for worse, her decision irrevocably changed her and the course of her life. Even now, as she walks to a flower shop, she mentally argues her case for refusing him. This decision has lent meaning to everything that came after it.
Clarissa regards Peter as a failure...
